How much the photographer brightened or darkened the shot.
Exposure compensation records the deliberate adjustment away from the metered exposure, in stops (EV). A value of +1 EV means the photo was intentionally brightened by one stop; −1 EV darkened it.
Where it misleads
Almost every camera writes 0 whether or not the dial was touched, so a zero means uncompensated rather than unset. The value is also relative to whatever the meter chose, which means it says how far the photographer moved away from the camera's guess, not how bright the photograph is.
